Godspell:  December 3 & 4, 2004

A student-directed musical, Godspell, was performed at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School on December 3 and 4. BSM seniors Chuck Benincasa and Katie Hawkinson directed the production. Chuck started giving serious thought to the idea last spring, and while some BSM students were in Scotland together performing another musical in August, they began to brainstorm the possibility of doing Godspell.

Along with Chuck and Katie, two other seniors (Devin Harrington and Christy Ledin) as well as two juniors (Ben Baumer and Anna Hickey) and two sophomores (Eddie Burns and Nadia Hulett) made up the cast. Chuck said that he "really enjoyed seeing the cast come together." This particular production, based on the gospel of Matthew, tells the story of Jesus Christ, set in modern times. As Chuck explained to BSM’s school newspaper, "We needed a show that would be versatile, that had a small cast. We wanted an ensemble piece so everyone has a moment in the spotlight."

During the planning stage for Godspell, Katie suggested that proceeds be donated. Since she and fellow cast member Christy Ledin have both battled cancer in the past, the obvious choice was Children’s Hospital and Clinics’ Cancer Kids Fund, an organization from which both girls have benefited.

Godspell was conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak. Music and new lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, and it was originally produced on the New York Stage by Edgar Lansbury, Stuart Duncan, and Joseph Beruh. BSM Faculty Member Colleen Quinn was the producer for the BSM adaptation, and the BSM drama department and the BSM Touch Worship group sponsored the musical.

One Act Play--A Piece of My Heart: Winter 2004

At the State One Act Play Festival, February 10, BSM was one of six Class AA schools whose performance was cited for a "starred performance." BSM won with Shirley Lauro’s "A Piece of My Heart," which was directed by Jan MacNally. BSM was making its second appearance at state and earned its first top rating. In this powerful and profound remembrance of Vietnam, six courageous women struggle to make sense of a war that irrevocably changed them and a nation that shunned them. Inspired by stories of valiant nurses and entertainers, this stunning drama about heroism, ideals and sacrifice offers a timely reflection on America and war. Cast members were Alyssa Cowger, Regina Kenney, Anne Rondoni, Anna Hickey, Shauna Hennessy, Stephanie Geerdes, Kaitlin Kelly, Ben Baumer, Stephen Larson, Tom Marrinan, Matt Stromseth, and Claire Drawe. Support personnel were Emily Ingalls, Dan Neubauer, and Greg Brew.

Jr. High Musical--Jr. High: The Musical:  March 4-6, 2005
