Health

Health (S1) (S2)

The health curriculum is designed to assist the students in making "healthy" choices. Topics of study include personal health, nutrition, mental health, substance abuse, stress management, physical fitness, body systems, marriage and family planning, as well as CPR.

One semester, one credit, required of all freshmen.

Emergency Response Part I (S1)

This is an advanced level course in first aid designed for people who are the first to respond to a medical emergency. Police officers, fire fighters, wilderness trip leaders, ski patrollers, athletic trainers, and lifeguards often receive this type of training. Students considering a career in medicine may find this course interesting and beneficial. Part I of this course will focus on assessment of injuries and illnesses, respiratory emergencies, and cardiac emergencies. Students only interested in CPR certification may take Part I without taking Part II. Students interested in Emergency Response certification must take both Part I and Part II. Upon successful competition of all skills, and scoring 80% or better on the final exam, students will receive American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.

Prerequisite: Health

One semester, one credit, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Emergency Response Part II (S2)

This is a continuation of Emergency Response Part I. Topics include bleeding, shock, medical emergencies, and childbirth. Students will also learn how to care for sports injuries, and what to do when help is delayed. Upon successful completion of Part I and Part II of this course, students will receive certification in American Red Cross Emergency Response, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, When Help is Delayed, Sport Safety, and State of Minnesota First Responder.

Prerequisite: Emergency Response Part I

One semester, one credit, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
