History Club

Activity: History Club
Adviser: Kathy Green

In 2004, BSM began a National History Club chapter. BSM was the second chapter to form in the state of Minnesota.  During the 2004-2005 school year, they read and discussed the book Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield, which is on the battle of Thermopylae. This battle took place in Greece in 480 B.C.E., and saw 300 Spartan knights and their allies face the enormous forces of Xerxes, King of Persia.

The club also invited the school to a showing of the movie Attila and designed t-shirts for this year's members with the slogan "The History Club--Because No One Cares What's Happening Now."

In 2006-2007, the History Club showed the movie Joyeux Noel about the soldier driven Christmas Eve armistice in World War I.  In addtion, students read The Kitchen Boy about the final end of the last tsar of Russia and his family.

The National History Club was founded in March 2002 to promote the reading, writing, discussion, and enjoyment of history. There are currently chapters in thirty-six states and two foreign countries, and there are over 4,600 students involved.

Kelly Tonnemaker ('07) received the History Club Student of the Year award in 2007.

Joshua Carlson (‘06) received the History Club Student of the Year award and received a copy the book 1776  by David McCullough from the Mount Vernon Society.

Chris Milroy ('05) was named BSM's History Student of the Year in 2005. He received a copy of David Hackett Fischer's Pulitzer Prize winning Washington's Crossing.
