Interdisciplinary


Interdisciplinary courses are designed to complement the existing curriculum. The courses listed allow a student to use a variety of academic skills with the option of obtaining elective credits or participating in an extracurricular activity. Students choosing Video Journalism as an extracurricular activity will not receive credit for the course.

Multicultural Studies: Race, Class and Gender

 

Acting (S1)

This course is designed to explore all aspects of dramatic performance. Students will study a variety of monologues, scenes, and short plays while working on skills of movement, breathing, articulation, and interpretation. There will be opportunities for students to create their own pieces, and to participate in a final project which will be presented on stage. Students who enroll in this class should primarily be interested in performing; all levels of interest and ability in the acting process will be encouraged and developed.

One semester, one credit, open to all grade levels.

Multicultural Studies: Contemporary Culture (S1)

This multidisciplinary course investigates what is culture and how various groups express themselves through work, music, art, and dance. In this hands-on class students will reflect on “The Arts” in the broadest sense of the word through a variety of cultural lessons. Students will examine topics from multiple perspectives answering questions such as: How does the music of a people influence their everyday life? How is dance used as prayer and celebration? How are painting, Hip Hop, spoken word, and puppetry political? Students will have the opportunity to develop two major areas of interest through projects and presentations.

One semester, one credit, open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors

Multicultural Studies: Race, Class and Gender (S2)

Students will actively explore their understanding of themselves and others as they engage in activities, discussions, and readings about race, class, and gender. Issues of power, privilege, and discrimination will be addressed in the context of historical events, popular culture, and Catholic social teachers. Field trips, speakers, films and projects will enrich and extend the learning into the greater community.

One semester, one credit, open to, juniors and seniors.

Sophomores who have successfully completed Contemporary Culture may enroll in this course.

Stage Technology & Stagecraft (S2)

This course is designed to teach students some of the basic skills and aspects of technical theater. Design will be taught through actual ahnds-on experience. Students will be required to learn basic carpentry skills and learn basic design concepts and responsibilities. In addition, they will be introduced to the technology of theater via architectural CAD drawings along with computer programming for lighting and sound. Since stage technology and stagecraft are practical skills, students will be required to work 10 hours outside of class time on technical and design issues related to BSM productions.

One semester, one credit, open to all grade levels

Video Journalism I- Knightline (YR)

Students learn the concepts and skills involved in video production, TV and internet broadcast news, and documentary filmmaking. Students learn videography, editing, interviewing, scriptwriting, reporting, DVD authoring and graphics skills. Students will create several video projects. Students learn Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and DVD Studio Pro applications. Students must have a digital camcorder to use for this class.

One semester, one credit, open to juniors and seniors.

Video Journalism II-Knightline (YR)

This class is for students who want to further develop their knowledge and skills involved in video production, TV and internet broadcast news, and documentary filmmaking. Students will enter their video projects in state and national film competitions. Students must have a digital camcorder to use for this class.

Prerequisite: Video Journalism I and approval of the instructor.

One semester, one credit, open to juniors and seniors.

Video Journalism Studio-Knightline (S1) (S2)

This class is for students who want to further develop their knowledge and skills involved in television news broadcasts and video production, as well as develop their leadership skills. Students will create school news stories and fulfill weekly broadcast and Student Editor responsibilities.

Prerequisite: Video Journalism I, II and approval of instructor.

One semester, one credit, open to seniors. This course may be repeated to enable students to improve skills and concepts.

Yearbook I-Sangraal (YR)

This course will allow students to explore journalism, software applications (Adobe InDesign and Jostens YearTech), and design principles while producing the yearbook as staff members. Students will be actively engaged in the production process throughout the school year. Activities will range from conducting interviews, taking photographs, writing copy and designing pages to marketing and selling the yearbook.

Prerequisite: Students must submit an application form. Admission will be based on the application, and availability of staff positions.

Two semesters, two credits, open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Yearbook II-Sangraal (YR)

Yearbook II is open to students who have been assigned editorial positions on the upcoming Sangraal staff. The production process will be further explored through performing editorial duties, such as supervising staff members, editing proofs, and communicating with the production plant.

Prerequisite: Yearbook I and instructor approval.

Two semesters, two credits, open to juniors and seniors.

Yearbook III-Sangraal (YR)

Prerequisite: Yearbook II and instructor approval.

Two semesters, two credits, open to seniors.
