We will vote on a team T-Shirt, captains, and sign up for treats .. yum, yum
2008-2009 Awards:
Coach's Award: Thi Hoang
Most Improved: Alexander DeMarco
Team Spirit Award: Monique Sarquis
Practice: Wednesday mornings at 7:15 A.M. in room 143. Please make every effort to attend these sessions and to be on time. The decision of who will be on the varsity team and a possible junior varsity team will be based largely on attendance and practice scores. There will be several sessions where the captains will be in charge because I will have early morning faculty meetings. I expect you to treat these as Captains' Practice and to behave appropriately.
Breakfast Club: For the early morning practices, students are strongly encouraged to take turns bringing breakfast for everyone. You can make it as fancy or as simple as you like. I will supply a calendar for the Wednesday sign up. You can speak to me or to the captains if you have any questions about this.
Minnesota Mathematics League: We also participate in the Minnesota Mathematics League Contests ("write-ins"). These take 30 minutes and are taken during homeroom and into the begining of second hour, one day a month (usually a Tuesday). There are six of these tests. The dates of this year’s competitions are Oct. 21, November 18, December 16, January 13, February 24, and March 24. It is imperative to listen to the morning and afternoon announcements as there are occasional conflicts with these dates.
American Mathematics Competitions (AHSME): The date of the AMC-10/AMC-12 is Tuesday, February 10, 2009, and will last 75 minutes. This test is voluntary, but I strongly recommend that you take it. Students with high scores will continue on to take other phases of the test and possibly participate in ARML, the American Regions Mathematics League.
Lettering: To earn a varsity letter in Math League, one must earn a minimum of 80 points. To earn a Math League participation certificate, one must earn a minimum of 30 points. Points are earned as follows:
2 points for each Wednesday morning practice attended with at least one practice test completed. Practices are held 7:15 – 8:00 Wednesday mornings (Oct 7 – Feb 17) in room 143 (Campus Ministry).
4 points for each conference meet attended. There are 5 conference meets during the season, always on Mondays after school. A bus will take us to and from each away meet. Please see the dates and locations above for this year.
X points = the actual raw score of points earned at each meet. Each member participates in two individual rounds at the meet, and also in the team round. (Individual raw score will be the score for team round divided by 8 plus the two individual scores.)
Y points = the actual raw scores earned at write-in contests. There are 6 write-in contests each year. They are held on Tuesday mornings in the BSM library conference room during homeroom once per month. Please see the dates above.
**IMPORTANT NOTE**
Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams: The Minnesota State High School Math League rules state that each school can only be represented by one team of eight students. The varsity team’s scores will count towards BSM’s team score while JV’s scores (along with the non-varsity and non-JV team members) will not. The idea behind the JV team is to look for potential varsity team members for the remainder of the season as well as for the following year. The captains (with the coach’s approval) will make the final decision of who will do what at each meet. Please remember that Benilde-St. Margaret's has a very large math team. The goal is to place our highest scoring students on varsity and second-highest scoring students on JV.
